Abstract
How to centralize R&D in a decentralized organization? Caterpillar Inc . is developing a process that promotes its business units' participat ion in structuring corporate technology strategies that mesh with busi ness and product strategies. Customer needs drive the process, which i s energizing a partnership between the business units and the central Technical Services Division intended to keep the enterprise on the len ding edge of relevant product technology.
