B. Norman, A POSTMODERN ENDEAVOR - FROM HISTORY AS REPRESENTATION OF THE PAST TOHISTORICAL THINKING, Journal of curriculum studies, 28(6), 1996, pp. 713-723
This paper starts from the postmodern assumption that there is no 'the
re, there'. The question that gives the paper its structure concerns t
he predicament that this assumption poses for the modern subject histo
ry. If we let go of the modernist assumption, then we face the demise
of the subject called history. Instead, we have historical thinking, a
move to thinking about thinking. The second part of the paper illustr
ates the experiencing of postmodern thinking historically through refl
exive thinking. I use a Chaplin film to promote dialogue on what is no
rmally taken for granted in life. The participants in dialogue explore
their own responses to the film, learning to think reflexively as a w
ay of being.
