S. Mayo et S. Sheppard, HOUSING SUPPLY UNDER RAPID ECONOMIC-GROWTH AND VARYING REGULATORY STRINGENCY - AN INTERNATIONAL COMPARISON, Journal of housing economics, 5(3), 1996, pp. 274-289
We present results of an empirical investigation and comparison of hou
sing supply in three rapidly growing countries: Malaysia, Thailand, an
d Korea. These countries offer three contrasting examples of different
approaches to development control. Korea has relatively strict contro
l of housing supply. Thailand has little effective regulation of devel
opment. Malaysia offers an intermediate fast, having adopted in the mi
d-1970s development control legislation patterned on the British Town
and Country: Planning Act. The consequences of this regulatory shift f
or aggregate housing supply appear to have been substantial. (C) 1996
