We have carried out calculations for the one dimensional quantum Heise
nberg antiferromagnet with alternating dimers and four-spin plaquettes
. This geometry is the one-dimensional counterpart of the two-dimensio
nal structure of the spin gap compound CaV4O9. The properties of the s
ystem are discussed in dependence on the competing dimer and plaquette
bonds.
