Abstract
We discuss a microcalorimeter for particle detection in which the abso rbed energy is determined by the change in magnetization of paramagnet ic spins in a metallic host. Tile magnetization is measured with a SQU ID magnetometer. Results are presented for the system of erbium ions i n gold.
