It is demonstrated that the irreversible magnetic flux penetration in
a type II Nb superconducting strip, slightly above Hc1, happens by the
discrete entry of flux bundles each of them containing several hundre
ds of quanta. This is in contrast with the reversible regime in which
the magnetic penetration is continuous. This non linear regime is stud
ied as a function of the strip dimensions thus establishing a case of
geometrical metastability in type II strips.
