The effect of organic molecules that are capable of interacting with s
urfactants on the binding of surfactant ions with oppositely charged p
olyelectrolytes and the structure of polymer-colloidal complexes were
studied. Depending on the ratio between the components in aqueous solu
tions of the mixtures of methyl orange and the surfactant, a variety o
f colloidal products can be formed. Their composition varies from stoi
chiometric to that of the micelles that incorporate the surfactant and
methyl orange in different amounts. Adding small amounts of methyl or
ange (5 x 10(-5) mol/l) to a polyelectrolyte solution reduces the crit
ical concentration for association of surfactant ions on the polyanion
, The morphologies of micelles formed by the free surfactant and those
immobilized on the polyanion are different.
