A reversed liquid chromatographic (LC) method was developed to determi
ne flavanone glycosides in citrus fruits. This method was applied in a
previous article for flavanone glycoside profiles of different grapef
ruit and pomelo juices. In the same way, the composition of the four m
ain flavanone glycosides (eriocitrin, narirutin, hesperidin and didymi
n) were investigated on 131 samples including mandarins and tangelos (
C reticulata) and oranges including blood, navel and common orange var
ieties (C sinensis). Analytical data of flavanonic compounds were obta
ined using principal component analysis and factorial discriminant ana
lysis. The navel samples differed from other orange samples in a high
content in narirutin (79-100 mg L(-1)) and didymin (31-30 mg L(-1)); t
he blood and semi-blood oranges were easily distinguishable because of
the presence of an unknown compound and the clementine because of hig
her ratios of hesperidin/narirutin and hesperidiri/didymin.
