A. Channing et Jp. Bogart, DESCRIPTION OF A TETRAPLOID TOMOPTERNA (ANURA, RANIDAE) FROM SOUTH-AFRICA, South African journal of zoology, 31(2), 1996, pp. 80-85
A new tetraploid species of sand frog, genus Tomoptema, is described f
rom the eastern Cape. On the basis of mtDNA sequences, allozymes and a
dvertisement calls, it appears to have arisen as a hybrid between the
adjacent diploid populations of T. delalandii and T. cryptotis. The hy
bridization event is estimated to have occurred 1,5 MYA. Excluding Xen
opus, this is the only allotetraploid member of an advanced frog famil
y that is known.
