Dr. Meyer et al., BILATERAL ENOPHTHALMOS ASSOCIATED WITH HYDROCEPHALUS AND VENTRICULOPERITONEAL SHUNTING, Archives of ophthalmology, 114(10), 1996, pp. 1206-1209
Background: Progressive bilateral enophthalmos in the absence of previ
ous trauma is rare. Methods: Three patients with progressive bilateral
severe enophthalmos whose only significant medical history was that o
f congenital hydrocephalus were treated by ventriculoperitoneal shunt
placement. Results: The patients demonstrated severe bilateral enophth
almos with poor eyelid apposition to the globes, resulting in superfic
ial keratopathy. Orbital computed tomographic scans confirmed the seve
re enophthalmos, with apparent reduced orbital fat volume. Orbital bon
y anatomy appeared normal. Conclusions: Bilateral progressive enophtha
lmos may be associated with hydrocephalus and ventriculoperitoneal shu
nting. The causal mechanism remains speculative.
