The coherent dynamics of a vibronic wave packet in KBr F centers is pr
esented. We observe the temporal evolution of single-electron wave pac
kets following femtosecond laser excitation. Electron dynamics leads t
o subpicosecond periodic oscillations of the sample transmission. Thes
e are monitored in real time by pump-probe techniques yielding directl
y the vibrational frequencies of the localized modes associated to gro
und and excited electronic states. These results, complemented by stat
ionary optical characterization, give further insight into the configu
ration coordinate model for F centers.
