Abstract
The most recent review of the neurosurgical workforce in Australasia w as produced in 1992, Regular update of statistics is necessary, partic ularly in response to recent political trends. A survey of all neurosu rgeons both resident in Australasia and overseas was undertaken, The q uestionnaire focussed on four main areas: surgeon distribution; worklo ad; activity breakdown; and surgeon: patient ratio calculation. Most s urgeons live in New South Wales acid Victoria, as expected, Following the recommendation of the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia, Austra lia currently has correct numbers of surgeons, however individual stat es vary widely, There are few subspecialty neurosurgeons in Australasi a and almost all devote the vast majority of their time to clinical wo rk, General work force issues are examined including future requiremen ts with respect to population changes.
