As one of its options the software package SLEDGE estimates Sturm-Liou
ville spectral density functions for problems having continuous spectr
um. This paper contains the error analysis underlying SLEDGE's approxi
mations: error bounds, Richardson's extrapolation, and stability analy
sis. Several alternate interpolation schemes are introduced and analyz
ed. An improvement to SLEDGE is suggested and tested. (C) 1996 Academi
