Ng. Kim et al., WAYFINDING AND THE SAMPLING OF OPTICAL-FLOW BY EYE-MOVEMENTS, Journal of experimental psychology. Human perception and performance, 22(5), 1996, pp. 1314-1319
N.-G. Kim, R. Growney, and M. T. Turvey (1996) demonstrated the nonnec
essity of the DMP strategy, the cornerstone of the wayfinding theory p
roposed by J. E. Cutting, K. Springer, P. A. Braren, and S. H. Johnson
(1992). Based on the reanalyses of the results of N.-G. Kim et al.'s
Experiment 2, J.E. Cutting (1996) proposes another retinal variable DD
LO as a substitute for DMP. The evidence for this new variable, howeve
r, is only circumstantial. A preferential strategy, we argue, follows
from recognizing that different fields of view are samplings of optica
l flow that enhance the detection of invariants-such as that which is
hypothesized to specify direction of heading.
