EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION OF CDV IMPACT ON ATM RESOURCE-MANAGEMENT

Measurements of the CDV that a CBR connection accumulates through an A TM network that consists of several switches are presented in this pap er. Combining network segments on the EXPLOIT testbed, the Swiss ATM p ilot network and the ATM Local Area Network at the Swiss Federal Insti tute of Technology, an extended test platform could be constructed to evaluate the magnitude of CDV accumulated in a real network. The measu rement results are compared to simple tractable models that can be use d to dimension the CDV tolerance for UPC/NPC functions along the netwo rk. Finally, an estimation of the impact of CDV on resource allocation is carried out using so-called Worst Case Traffic models to estimate the maximum amount of CDV tolerated to guarantee the proper operation of multiplexing functions.
