The temperature dependence of the optical absorption edge CdS crystals
embedded in borosilicate glass from 300 K to 900 K is reported. The a
bsorption edge shifts to lower energy by 250 meV as temperature is inc
reased. Over the temperature range, 300 K < T < 900 K, where the effec
t of temperature change on the absorption edge is reversible, the shif
t can be represented by a straight line with slope -3.8 X 10(-4) eV/K
for 5-10 nm particles and -4.9 X 10(-4) eV/K for 3.4 nm particles. No
evidence is found for a melting phase transition up to 900 K. The abse
nce of a melting transition sets an upper limit on the energy of the c
rystal-glass interface of 0.2 J/m(2).
