Many years ago Louis Hellman drew a cartoon, illustrating a paper by T
erence Lee (1971), which suggested that the (then) recent marriage bet
ween architecture (represented by a large lady) and psychology (repres
ented by a small Freud look-alike) was unfulfilling for the female par
ty. Twenty years later, that marriage is no more satisfying for the ar
chitecture partner, though formal divorce proceedings have not been en
tered into. The intention of this paper is to outline the progress of
the marriage, to show that it is not a total failure, and to counsel b
oth partners as to ways to make the relationship more productive and s
atisfying in the future. (C) 1996 Academic Press Limited
