Abstract
In this review we discuss evidence indicating the existence of specifi c binding receptor sites for progesterone (P), estrogen (E), and testo sterone (T) in neural membranes. The review starts with the methodolog ical approaches for studying receptor binding sites in neural membrane s. Second, we examine the physiological and biochemical data supportin g the concept of cognate membrane receptors for P, E, and T, the so-ca lled mPR, mER, and mTR. Last, we present an overview emphasizing the c oncept of continuity of action of steroids on cells from the outer sur face to nuclear events. (C) 1996 Academic Press, Inc.
