The role of excitons in the laser action of ternary II-VI quantum well
s is investigated. As a consequence of an increased stability due to l
ocalization on alloy disorder, bi-excitons are dominant up to temperat
ures clearly above 100 K. Steady-state pump-probe measurements reveal
a bi-excitonic gain as large as 2.5x10(4) cm(-1). Above 200 K, the thr
eshold density grows steeply and the laser emission turns into electro
n-hole plasma recombination. (C) 1996 American Institute of Physics.
