Abstract
The equation of motion governing slender Aux tubes is derived using a variational principle. I consider the interaction between the tube and its surroundings due to buoyancy, added mass (anisotropic inertia) an d hydrodynamic drag. It is pointed out that the application of the sim ple added mass formula commonly used in the litterature is in fact lim ited to the case of an unstratified, non-rotating flow.
