Abstract
The patent literature describing activity relating to beta-amyloid (A
beta) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) from May 1995 to July 1996 is revie
wed. Inventions are classified into five groups: therapeutics that inf
luence A beta production, therapeutics based on interfering with A bet
a aggregation and deposition, therapeutics based on interfering with A
beta neurotoxicity, diagnostics and animal models. While new chemical
entities are described as therapeutic agents, the clinical developmen
t of these compounds is hindered by the lack of a widely available ani
mal model which mimics the pathology of AD.
