We report infrared to visible frequency upconversion through a two-pho
ton absorption process followed by energy transfer between a pair of P
r3+ ions in a silicate fiber. Emission in the blue and red regions of
the spectrum are obtained through absorption of infrared photons, desp
ite the strong nonradiative decay rates that are characteristic of sil
icate fibers. In particular the red emission could be observed by the
naked eye possibly due to superfluorescent emission that takes place u
nder strong pumping in the infrared.
