Sy. Yamamoto et al., HIGH-RESOLUTION CONTACT RECORDING AND DIAGNOSTICS WITH A RASTER-SCANNED MR HEAD, IEEE transactions on magnetics, 32(5), 1996, pp. 3410-3412
We have developed a precision scanning instrument whereby an arbitrary
magnetoresistive (MR) head may be used to read or write test bits on
standard magnetic media. A high resolution, linearized positioning sta
ge is used to raster-scan recording media (either a hard disk platter
or tape coupon) with respect to a commercial MR read/write head. The s
canning is performed with the slider in physical contact with the medi
a. As with a spin stand, this instrument can be used to evaluate recor
ding media and MR heads. However, with its superior positioning accura
cy and its ability to read and write in contact, this ''Magneto-Resist
ance Microscope'' (MRM) has the potential to address fundamental issue
s associated with recording at densities approaching 10 Gbits/in(2).
