Magnetic materials exhibiting gigantic magnetostriction, especially Te
rfenol, are currently being widely used in fine positioning and active
vibration damping devices, By involving accurate magnetostriction mod
els during design stages, precision of such devices may be significant
ly enhanced. In this paper a straight-forward approach that employs an
isotropic vector Preisach-type hysteresis models in simulating field-s
tress effects on magnetic materials is presented. Formulation of the p
roposed model is given and its identification problem is solved. The p
resented approach has been numerically implemented and numerous digita
l computer simulations have been performed for Terfenol material. Samp
le simulation results as well as comparisons with experimentally obser
ved magnetostriction carves are reported in the paper.
