A magnetoelastic Gruneisen parameter has been derived from thermodynam
ic equations of state. It has been found that the magnetoelastic Grune
isen parameter is proportional to the magnetomechanical coupling coeff
icient, k. This relates directly the energy conversion efficiency to t
he the anharmonicity in the crystal lattice. It therefore provides a w
ay of predicting the field dependence of the energy conversion efficie
ncy in magnetostrictive materials.
