Abstract
The modified signed-digit (MSD) number system satisfies the requiremen ts of totally parallel addition using identical units and enables the addition of any two numbers in three sucessive steps. We show a simple and compact design of the parallel optical addition module based on M SD number representation using Boolean polarization-encoded logic alge bra (BPLA). The four transforms of MSD addition are expressed mathemat ically and the realization of the transform module using liquid crysta l devices (LCDs) are also given.
