A new method for drawing planar osculating are splines, G(1) curves ma
de by joining circular arcs, is described. The are splines interpolate
, match unit tangents, and match curvatures at the interpolation point
s. Are splines produced by this new method match more general data, an
d thus give a more controlled curve, than are splines produced from bi
arcs. The accuracy of are splines produced by the new method is analyz
ed and compared to the accuracy of are splines produced from biarcs wh
en both are approximating smooth curves. When both have the same numbe
r of circular arcs, the new method produces an are spline with a small
er error than the are spline produced from biarcs.
