Abstract
Since carotenoids are likely to grow in importance and value, the reco very of carotenoids from palm oil and palm oil by-products is importan t. Numerous extracting methods have been developed to recover the caro tenoids from crude palm oil; these include I) the saponification metho d, 2) the iodine method, 3) the molecular distillation method, 4) extr action by selective solvents and crystallization, 5) separation by ads orption and 6) gel permeation. Other procedures with regard to palm oi l methyl esters (POME) were also reported. The object of this chapter is to classify and assess the various extracting methods proposed.
