Abstract
We present evidence for a thermodynamically stable incommensurate elon gated-triangle (ELT) phase in quartz, observed by transmission electro n microscopy at the alpha-beta structural transition. The phase sequen ce on cooling is: incommensurate equilateral-triangle (EQT) phase (fer roelectric)-incommensurate ELT (ferroelectric and ferroelastic)uniform cu phase. The ELT blocks could be responsible for the large light sca ttering in the vicinity of the alpha-beta transition. (C) 1996 America n Institute of Physics.
