Abstract
Plant cell and tissue culture techniques are based on the unique abili ty of plant cells to regenerate whole plants from in vitro cultured mu lticellular explants or even single cells. In cereales regeneration vi a embryogenesis is possible using somatic cells, immature pollen grain s and in vitro cultured zygotes. Today, some of these techniques are a lready integrated in breeding programs e.g. haploid production or muta nt selection. Furthermore, they offer the possibility to expand the av ailable pool for gene selection by the use of techniques in cell and m olecular biology.
