Abstract
In this study the influence of baroque music and the influence of trad itional African music on the reading development of black students wer e compared. The results show that even though all the students benefit ted from the reading development programme, the baroque and African mu sic made no significant differential contributions. It was also found that the students who were exposed to the African music tended to expe rience it as a distraction. On the other hand, the students who were e xposed to the baroque music experienced it as having a positive influe nce on their performance.
