DNA restriction fragment length polymorphism at the apoprotein C-III g
ene locus were studied in 124 patients with coronary heart disease and
112 healthy subjects of Kazakh nationality, An Sst1 polymorphism loca
ted in the 3' noncoding region of the apoC-III gene identified two all
eles, The frequency of one of these alleles (S1) was significantly hig
her in patients with coronary artery disease compared to control subje
cts (p<0,05). Contrary to previously reported association of the S2 al
lele with coronary artery disease in Caucasians in Kazakhs there was d
ifference in frequency of S1 allele of the apoC-III gene between patie
nts with coronary artery disease and control subjects, Thus apoC-III p
olymorphism could be a marker of an abnormality in the apoC-III gene p
redisposing to atherosclerosis in this national group.
