The current program at NIST to observe spectral lines of atoms and ato
mic ions and determine atomic energy levels is reviewed. Results for t
he doubly ionized atoms Zr III, Hg III and Dy III, which are astrophys
ically important, are summarized in some detail, as are recent results
for the Li-like atoms Li I and Fe XXIV. Progress on installation of a
very high resolution Fourier transform spectrometer at NIST is report
ed.
