H. Pols et al., ALPRAZOLAM PREMEDICATION AND 35-PERCENT CARBON-DIOXIDE VULNERABILITY IN PANIC PATIENTS, Biological psychiatry, 40(9), 1996, pp. 913-917
A group of 20 patients who met the DSM-III-R criteria for panic disord
er with or without agoraphobia underwent a 35% carbon dioxide (CO2) ch
allenge after either 1 mg alprazolam or placebo in a double-blind, ran
domized, cross-over design. Despite the anxiolytic potential of alpraz
olam, it produced no significant effects on CO2-induced anxiety and pa
nic symptomatology when compared to placebo. (C) 1996 Society of Biolo
