The complexation equilibria of (2-thiazolin-2yl)hydrazine hydrochlorid
e (TzHyHCl) with zinc(II) and cadmium(II) have been studied in aqueous
solution at 298 K and 0.1 M ionic strength in NaClO4. The formation c
onstants were determined and are discussed in terms of the characteris
tics of the ligand. The compounds [ZnCl(TzHy)(2)]Cl and [Cd(TzHy)(mu-C
l)(2)](n) . nH(2)O have been isolated acid their crystal structures de
termined. In the Zn-II compound, the geometry around the central atom
is a distorted trigonal-bipyramid composed of four nitrogen atoms from
two TzHy ligands and one chlorine. The Cd-II complex is polymeric, wi
th octahedrally coordinated cadmium linked into infinite chains by dou
ble (mu-chloro) bridges. The coordination sphere around each cadmium c
enter is completed by two nitrogen atoms from a TzHy ligand. In both c
ases, the crystal structure is stabilized by an extensive hydrogen-bon
d network. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd
