SYNTHESIS AND FLUORESCENCE OF 2,4-DIPHENYL-1-AZAFLUORENE

2,4-diphenyl-1-azafluorene (3) was synthesised by the reaction of 2-ph enylmethylene indan-1-one with caynoacetamide in the presence of ammon ium acetate. Its solutions in protic solvents display a blue fluoresce nce, while in aprotic solvents a violet fluorescence was produced. The fluorescence has been quenched by concentration and proved to be acco mpanied by the formation of excited dimer of the type excimer. The kin etic rates of the quenching and the formation of the excimer were dete rmined.
