Bromination of ethyl 2-arylaminothiazole-4-carboxylates (I) in glacial
acetic acid gives HBr salts of 5-bromo derivatives (II) while iodinat
ion of I by iodine monochloride in aq HCl gives HI salts of 5-iodothia
zole derivatives (IV). Free bases III and V are obtained by basificati
on of II and IV respectively. Five selected compounds from II, III, IV
and V have been screened for their antifungal and antibacterial activ
ity.
