A 31-year-old man with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome presente
d with herpes tester ophthalmicus on the right. Five days after he beg
an treatment for the tester pseudodendrites and skin lesions, he devel
oped superficial punctate keratitis, uveitis, and crusting skin lesion
s in the left eye. After treatment, the ocular lesions resolved in bot
h eyes without incident. The bilateral manifestation of herpes tester
ophthalmicus is a result of the increased severity associated with imm
unosuppression caused by the human immunodeficiency virus.
