Two Australian mobility surveys are analysed (February 1989 and Februa
ry 1992) to identify the explanation of labour mobility in Australian
industry. An informal analysis reveals that labour turnover is higher
in boom as opposed to recessed conditions. A formal legit study reveal
s that industry unemployment rates have a significant impact on male t
urnover, but not on female mobility. The age of workers and their tenu
re in the job reduce the odds of a job change, generally, while the te
ndency towards part time work is encouraging mobility. Occupational st
atus is significant, especially among male workers, and for plant oper
ators and labourers in particular.
