Several possible solutions for axial flux wheel motor drives for Elect
ric Vehicles (EVs) are investigated. As a case study, a small electric
city car has been chosen and a 10 kW motor for each wheel has been se
lected for the comparison between the different motors types. Among th
e different solutions, the axial flux interior PM motors seem to be th
e best compromise in terms of efficiency, weight, compactness and capa
bility characteristics.
