Abstract
A combined hydrodynamical transport and ecological model system with 1 2 state variables is presented. Numerical oscillations in the solution of the advection of ecological parameters, as they may appear in area s of steep fronts, may give rise to numerical problems in the solution of the ecological equation system. This has been examined with use of the UPWIND, QUICKEST, MSOU and QUICKEST-ULTIMATE advection schemes by an application to the North Sea, simulating a complete seasonal cycle . The effect of using different advection schemes on the ecological si mulations is discussed.
