Abstract
Sixty three piggery units with a total herd size of 424 pigs in the sm all-scale and semi-intensive management systems from semi arid and tro pical highland areas of Morogoro region were screened for intestinal p rotozoan parasites. Thirtysix percent of the screened animals were pos itive for eimeriosis and 7.8% for cryptosporidiosis. Prevalences of ei meriosis in. the semi-intensive and small-scale management systems wer e 22% and 48%, respectively. High prevalences of eimeriosis and crypto sporidiosis (60% and 25%, respectively) were observed in the tropical highland climate area (Mgeta) and low rates (26% and 0.3%, respectivel y) were evident in the semi-arid zone. Ninety five per cent of infecte d pigs excreted between 100 and 5000 OPG and five per cent were excret ing more than 5000 oocysts per gram of faeces. Species of Eimeria iden tified were E. porci (31%), E. suis (22%), E. polita (15%), E. perminu ta (11%), E. debliecki (9%), E. neodebliecki (8%) and E. scabra (4%).
