In order to study the property of the high electronic conductivity oxi
de ceramics as the cathode material for alkaline battery, the perovski
te-type oxides shown by Ca0.9Nd0.1-yMnO3-delta were prepared. Its nons
toichiometry (3-delta) was 2.90 at room temperature in air for the y=0
sample and 2.88 for the y=0.015 sample in which the Ca-site deficienc
y was intended. The electrical conductivity of sintered porous oxide o
f y=0.015 (porosity: ca. 60%) prepared as the active material was 1.0x
10(2) S cm(-1) temperature in air, which was about two times as high a
s that of y=0 sample. The sintered oxide ceramics worked as the cathod
e active materials in alkaline solutions. Using the y=0.015 sample oxi
de, the discharge capacity of 720 C g(-1) was achieved in 15% KOH solu
tion. It was comparable to that of electrolytic MnO2 and could be enha
nced by discharging in 5% LiOH solution.
