Abstract
The suitability of current small-scale tests to characterise the crack arrest behaviour of structures is assessed. Predictions are possible using instrumented Charpy, drop-weight tear and 'Pellini' drop-weight tests. However, from the review of a large database of relevant test r esults, it is concluded that the 'Pellini' drop-weight test is the mos t suitable test available at present to characterise structural crack arrest behaviour.
