As early as in the eighties fears arose in Austria that the population
of small game is constantly diminishing, a fact which could not be su
fficiently explained by natural population dynamic processes. In sever
al territories which had in former times been intensively inhabited by
small game, the population density reached such a low level already s
ome years ago so that these areas cannot be used for hunting any more.
