Aluminate sodalites containing the telluride and tellurite ions have b
een synthesised for the first time. The structures of Sr-8[AlO2](12)(T
eO3)(2) and its reduced product Sr-8[AlO2]Te-12(2) have been determine
d using Rietveld refinement of powder neutron diffraction data. In Sr-
8[AlO2]Te-12(2) the anion occupies a position at the sodalite cage cen
tre, whilst in Sr-8[AlO2](12)(TeO3)(2) the larger tellurite ion is dis
placed to allow reasonable coordination to the strontium ions. The red
uction of the occluded TeO32- to Te2- has also been investigated using
IR spectroscopy, Al-27 and Te-125 MAS NMR spectroscopies and Te L(III
)-edge EXAFS.
