A novel unsymmetrical tetradentate azine, 2-acetylpyridinesalicylaldaz
ine (Haps), was prepared by condensing salicylhydrazone with 2-acetylp
yridine, and was characterized by elemental analysis and its i.r. spec
trum. This ligand reacted with Mn, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn acetates to yield
deprotonated M(aps)(2)(H2O)(2) complexes. Subsequent reaction of the
mononuclear unit Zn(aps)(2)(H2O)(2) with MCl(2) gave home-[ZnCl2Zn(aps
)(2)(H2O)(2)] and heterobinuclear [MCl(2)Zn(aps)(2)(H2O)(2)] type azin
e-bridged complexes, which were characterized by analytical, molecular
weight, conductivity (solid and solution), magnetic susceptibility, a
nd electronic, e.s.r. and i.r. spectroscopies, and X-ray powder diffra
ction data.
