Abstract
An analysis of two experiments which have been used to demonstrate tha t the Pancharatnam phase is unbounded is presented. This highlights th e origin of both the geometrical and the dynamical components of the o bserved phase changes, and clarifies the differences between geometric al and dynamical phase shifts > 2 pi.
