Abstract
We emphasize the diffraction properties of cylindrically symmetrical f irst order systems. Based on matrix optics, our investigations lead to two conclusions. One is that diffraction of such a lossless system co nsists of a fractional Fourier transform. The other is that the fracti onal order of the system is not unique. It depends on the concrete imp lementation of a diffraction system.
