We have determined the first ionization potentials of tungsten and rhe
nium atoms to be 63427.7 +/- 0.8 cm(-1) (7.86404 +/- 0.00010 eV) (2 si
gma error bound) and 63181.6 +/- 0.9 cm(-1) (7.83352 +/- 0.00011 eV),
respectively, by fitting ns and nd Rydberg series obtained by performi
ng mass-selected double-resonance ionization spectroscopy on supersoni
c beams of laser-vaporized tungsten and rhenium atoms. (C) 1996 Optica
